Huaheng tower is located at Zhuji’s new Central Business District on the east edge of the historic city. The site, at the intersection between Dongwang Road and the East 1st Ring has a privileged position with excellent views to the People’s Park and it faces Zhuji’s new government headquarters.

The tower rises up to 100 meters in height and it contains a commercial podium with four floors filled with retail space, restaurants and cafes and 23 floors of office space. The underground parking has a dedicated level for bicycles parking and services besides two more levels for car parking.

The tower shape consists of an extruded ellipse terminated in a curved triangular podium with a winter garden that becomes the heart of the building.

By turning the tower 45 degrees towards the southwest, we clearly improve the dialogue with the context. It offers uninterrupted views to the surroundings and its distinctive presence becomes highly visible from any position at the street level.

The floor plan has been conceived as a flexible space to be configured in multiple ways, keeping the services core on the northern side and creating an open plan to maximize the views and a better illumination of the interior.

The facade is a modern reinterpretation of the Chinese lattice, with a double-layer system of floor-to-ceiling glass and an outer layer of perforated aluminum panels. These panels work as a lighting filter to reduce the solar gains whilst occulting the operable windows. By means of this solution, we keep a uniform and more elegant appearance while offering manual operable windows. Besides, the cavity created in the middle serves as a thermally insulating buffer zone that clearly impacts the HVAC systems performance and improves the occupants comfort.

From the distance, the facade pixelation becomes symbolic since it resembles the shiny, multi colored reflection of the pearls (Zhuji is the most important producer of pearls in China), thus becoming a referent point for the city.

At the bottom, the facade becomes a single glazed layer in order to soften such a vast volume at the street level with a simple and delicate solution, creating more transparency and visual links from and to the interior.
